Scenarios for discussion with your team. These are made-up scenarios intended for training conversation and decision-making practice.

Scenario 1: LT-14 Pipe

You have been called to LT-14. Staff report the patient has a pipe in his hands. When you arrive, you see the pipe and lighter in his hands. When you ask him to surrender the pipe, he refuses. He does not want to leave AMA, and staff do not want him to leave for medical reasons.

  • What would need to be documented afterward?

Scenario 2: ER Disturbance

You have someone causing a disturbance in ER. They want to see a doctor and triage does not want them removed. You have spoken with them about their behaviour, and they told you to “fuck off.”

Discuss:
  • How do you balance access to care with safety and behaviour expectations?
  • What verbal direction or warning would be appropriate?
  • When would you involve triage, charge nurse, TL/ATL, or police?
  • What details should be captured in notes or a file?

Scenario 3: Unit 33 Suspected Drug Use

You have been called to Unit 33. One of their patients is suspected of drug use. They left the unit and came back appearing under the influence. When you go to the room, the patient admits to using fentanyl but says they do not want you going through their belongings.

Discuss:
  • What authority or policy questions need to be considered?
  • What should be clarified with nursing staff before taking action?
  • How would consent, safety risk, and patient care affect your decision-making?
  • What should be documented if no search occurs, or if further action is taken?
